For the past couple of years I've driven past Lew's Canoes
on my way to and from town. Lew Hurley is a one man operation building some
of the prettiest yet cost effective little craft you've ever seen. My
curiosity finally got the best of me so I stopped to look.What I found was a shop full of some of the coolest
canoes I've ever seen. Lew combines old world craftsmanship and
materials with technologically sophisticated materials like ballistic
nylon and epoxy to create strong light attractive canoes at an
affordable price. He's filling the gap between the Plain Jane low
end fiber and aluminum offerings from mass producers like Coleman and
the high end exotic custom canoes. |

| You can't buy a Canoe by Lew online, or
even by mail. He sells his canoes exclusively from his shop
located about seven miles east of Huntsville, Texas on Highway 190.
You can call him at 1-936-435-1031 most anytime after noon. If
you're in the area, stop and say "hi". Lew is friendly and loves
to talk canoes and show his work. If you're a fellow builder, he's
happy to talk shop. All of Lew's canoes are built to order, so be
prepared to wait a bit for yours. Prices start at about $700
dollars for a ten-and-a-half foot basic and up into several thousand for
the double outrigger sailing model (see additional photos). |

| Lew is currently constructing a sixteen foot
fishing hybrid square stern canoe, complete with live wells, that will
be powered by a five or six horse outboard. |
